In May of 2013 former Guatemalan President Rios Montt was convicted of genocide against the Ixil Mayan people in a Guatemalan court for his direction of the counter-insurgency sweeps through their villages beginning in 1982. Kate Doyle, senior analyst with the National Security Archives in washington D.C., was among several dedicated women (featured in the documentary film Granito) who worked for decades to achieve accountability. her testimony was pivotal in gaining the conviction of Rios Montt.
