Activists Oppose UMass Fee Hikes

Bread & Roses Interview 6.16.11 – HOST: Joel Saxe

Another annual fee hike by UMass Trustees (7.5%) is discussed by three youth activists in the context of neoliberal attacks on public education and organizing efforts to oppose the rising cost of higher education. Patrick Burke is an organizer for the Western Mass. Student Labor Action Project. Ben Taylor is an organizer with the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts (PHENOM) and the International Socialist Organization (ISO). Joe Mirkin was active in the Justice for Jason Campaign and PHENOM. The question of how to organize young people and communities in new effective ways is previewed with an excerpt of an oral history interview with Willie Surenko, an elderly member of the CPUSA who recounts the everyday culture of Jewish radicalism that flourished on the Lower East Side in the 1920s.
